Doris Lauer, 94 of Bismarck formerly of McClusky died Wednesday, July 12, 2023 after being admitted to the Missouri Slope Care Center in Bismarck on July 5, 2023 under hospice care.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 17, 2023. at the United Methodist Church of McClusky at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in the McClusky City Cemetery.
Doris Elaine Broeckel was born on September 10, 1928 four miles north of McClusky. She was the daughter of John and Elvina (Jaton) Broeckel. The family moved to a farm southwest of McClusky where she grew up on the family farm and attended school in McClusky. In 1941 the family moved to the Regan area where she attended Rock Hills Country School and then Canfield Country School. As a young woman she helped neighbors with the milking and cooking for the threshers. Doris married Melvin Lauer on April 29, 1947, at the EUB parsonage in McClusky by Reverend Riecker. They celebrated seventy years of marriage prior to Melvin passing away on August 1, of 2017. To this union five children were born, Melva, Darrell, LeAnne, Keith, Kevin. They lived southwest of Pickardville where they farmed and ranched, retiring in 1991. They then moved to Bismarck in 1996. Doris was a member of the United Methodist Church in McClusky and served as Pickard Township clerk.
Doris enjoyed bowling, which she started in 1958 and bowled in leagues until 1999. She traveled to three national bowling tournaments during her years of bowling, one in Las Vegas, Nevada, one in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and one in Bismarck, ND. Doris played accordion for dances with her brothers. She also enjoyed making strudels for her family, cooking, baking, having company over, and jigsaw puzzles.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Melva Kramlich of Exeter, Ca, LeAnne Schlafman, McClusky, ND; sons, Darrell of Bismarck. Keith (Brenda) of Bismarck, Kevin of St. Joseph, Missouri; (14) grandchildren; (23) great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; sons-in-law, Jerry Kramlich, Gerald Schlafman; daughters-in-law, Norma Lauer, Candise Lauer; sisters, LeMoyne Eggleston Plorde Erickson, Shirley Bittner, Gladys Reiser Hirsch, Isabel Helm, Clara Braunberger Jeanotte, Laura Fitzgerald, Ella Neff, Ruby Murray; brothers, Wilton, Lloyd, Vernon, Merle, stillborn son, Orville James. In Lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with Hertz Funeral Home of McClusky.
