Donald Alexander, 67, Harvey died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Bethel Baptist Church, Harvey, ND.
Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND. Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Donald James Alexander was born on May 12, 1945 in Harvey, ND. He was the son of Frederick and Esther (Anhorn) Alexander. He grew up on the family farm south of Martin. He attended rural school and graduated from the Harvey High School in 1963. He represented the Harvey High School at the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle, WA. Donald attended the North Dakota State College of Science, North Dakota State University and the Northrup Institute of Technology in Los Angeles. Don was studying to be an aeronautical engineer but the desire to return home to farm prevailed. He also served in the North Dakota National Guard and his unit was sent to the Zip to Zap riot in May 1969. He met Ethel Voag while on a visit to Washington. Don and Ethel were married on November 30, 1974 in Spokane, WA. They moved to the family farm south of Martin. Don was very interested in technology and advancing farming practices. He participated in university research on equipment modifications and alternative fuels. He also believed in organizing farmers to improve marketing and production. At one time he was the youngest national board member for the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and a developing member of the Sherco Trucking operation. He was a member of the North Dakota Resource Council. Don was also an entrepreneur, starting the A and E Anhydrous Ammonia Plant in Harvey with Roger Ebel, the Alexander/Peterson Grain Company and developing NuGrain Products Inc. He was a thirty year member of the Wells Eagles Aerie in Harvey. Don was a 41 year member of the Harvey Rural Fire Protection District and served as the Secretary Treasurer for 35 years. He was a life member of the North Dakota Firefighters Association, Bethel Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Trustee and an honorary member of the Little Shell Nation in Belcourt. He also enjoyed watching his great nieces and nephews grow up.
Don is survived by his wife, Ethel of Harvey; son, Richard and daughter, Heather both of Minot; brother, Gerald (Rose) Alexander of Coeur D Alene, Idaho; numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
