Delores was born April 6, 1925 on a farm near Denhoff, North Dakota, the daughter of Robert and Lydia Rose (Hertz) Demke. Delores graduated from the Goodrich High School in 1943 as the valedictorian of her class and went to Valley City State Teacher's College. She taught school for three years, marrying Lloyd H. Axt on December 18, 1945, and moving to a farm near McClusky where they farmed and ranched until Lloyd's health failed in November, 2005. Lloyd and Delores celebrated sixty-five years of marriage.
Delores was active in the homemakers groups in McClusky and was also a Sunday School teacher at the Evangelical United Brethren church. She was also active with the Mercer and Goodrich Baptist church women's groups and the Christian Women's Association. Delores served as treasurer with the women's groups of Gideons' International.
She gave her family her love of gardening (flowers, especially as well as vegetables). Delores also enjoyed embroidering and left many beautiful projects to be enjoyed by her family. Her children and grandchildren benefited from her high Christian morals and training and liked listening to her interesting stories about catching gophers and herding cows on the open prairie. Having been a teacher, she highly encouraged and supported learning and education. Delores served as room mother for each of her children at the local schools. Until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she remembered every family member's birthday and anniversary.
Her survivors include her husband, Lloyd of Mandan, her children, Ronald (Cindy) of Baltic, Ohio; Rose Marie Greer (John) of Houston, Texas; Dale (Cristi) of Fountain Hills, Arizona and Kevin (Sandi) of McClusky and Bismarck. Other survivors are her grandchildren: Dr. Jason Axt (Meridith) of Nashville, Tennessee; Bryan Brown (Colleen) of Houston, Texas; Joshua Axt (Kassandra) of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Shannon Greer of Houston, Texas; Elizabeth Axt of Canton, Ohio and Charles Axt of Phoenix, Arizona; two great grandchildren (Natasha Axt and Rhett Brown); four step grandchildren, and eight step great-grandchildren.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lydia Demke, her two brothers, Cecil and Larry Demke, and one granddaughter, Kimberly Axt.
Her family is especially grateful for the kindness of her caretakers at the Mandan Care Center.
Hertz Funeral Home of McClusky is in charge of arrangements.
