Obituary

Dean Hofland, 91, Harvey, ND died Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 7 at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Dean Virgil Hofland was born on September 11, 1927 at Reeder, ND. He was the son of Leonard and Mabel (Berg) Hofland.  He attended school there and was baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reeder.  Dean served two enlistments (1946 – 1947 and 1950 to 1952) in the army receiving his honorable discharge at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.  Dean married Ida Ruth Kroll on September 1, 1950 in Jamestown, ND.  After the military, Dean was employed by Dakota Electric Supply in Fargo.  They eventually made their home in Harvey.  In 1964 Dean went into the grocery business, later becoming part owner of the Harvey Warehouse Grocery.  After retiring from the grocery store Dean enjoyed working as the cemetery sexton and groundskeeper at Sunnyside Cemetery in Harvey.  Dean moved to the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in July 2012.  He enjoyed visiting with the staff, other residents and visitors.  His family will be forever grateful for the loving care he received there.

Dean was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Wells Eagles Aerie in Harvey. He was also a Past Commander and Adjutant at the American Legion Post No. 28 in Harvey.  He served in the Harvey Color Guard for many years.  His country, community, church and friends were important to him.  However, most important was his family and his precious grandchildren.  Dean was known for his friendliness and his love of football.  He was an avid Minnesota Vikings Fan.

Dean is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Bruce Tofteland; granddaughters, Jennifer (Kent) Card and Alyson (Mitch) Schall; grandson, Michael Tofteland; several nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his wife Ida on June 23, 2009; an infant daughter; parents and siblings, Donald Hofland, Marian Ness, Delores Barbera and Arlene Patterson.

Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church, 1520 Advent St., Harvey, ND or St. Aloisius Nursing Home, 325 East Brewster, Harvey, ND.
