Elizabeth "Betty" English, 95, of Harvey died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at the St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 6, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the church. Betty was born June 20, 1925, on the family farm northwest of Harvey, to Albert and Mary Elizabeth (Wack) Zerr. She grew up on the farm and helped with the typical farm chores. She attended a one-room grade school in Hillsdale Township where she skipped two grades. She entered Harvey High School at age 12 and graduated in 1941. She then attended Union Business College in Grand Forks for one year. At age 17, she went to work in Fessenden at the agricultural office for a short period. Betty then moved to Seattle, WA, and was a stenographer and file clerk for Consolidated Freightways. She returned to Harvey and was the bookkeeper for the Gambles-Skogmo Store.
Betty married James M. English on April 18, 1949. She then took on the roles of housewife and mother and did the bookkeeping for her husband's dray and trucking business, English Transfer. When the youngest of her four children was in junior high, she returned to the workforce as business manager for the Harvey Public School, a position she held 16 years, retiring in 1991.
Betty enjoyed a competitive game of cards with friends and family, especially Zioncheck with her grandchildren. She was an avid worker of crossword puzzles and word finds. The dictionaries next to her chair were well worn! Betty enjoyed cooking and baking, especially during the holidays, and spending time with family and friends.
The Roman Catholic faith was important to Betty. She was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and its Holy Family Society. Betty belonged to the VFW Auxiliary, Eagles Club Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens Club, all in Harvey.
Betty is survived by her sons, James J. (Donna) of Harvey, Michael (Lynn) of Minot, Patrick (Irene) of Fargo; daughter, Julie (Gene) Crabtree of Jamestown, eight grandchildren, Matthew, Lindsey, Aaron, Ryan, Steven and Scott English, Colin and Chloe Crabtree; six great-grandchildren, Landon, Gracie, Zoe, Nora, Alex, and Adley; sister-in-law, Arvilla Zerr; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas and Eleanor English; special friend, Marlys Keller; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years on May 21, 2014; brothers, Joseph, Leo, and Edward Zerr; sisters, Margaret Volk and Marie Grund.
