Arnold "Arnie" was born on May 23, 1937 in New York state to Charles and Pauline (Helm) Schliff. His mother died of complications shortly after Arnie was born. His mother's sister, Annie and her husband Fred Putz from Martin, ND drove out to New York and brought him back to North Dakota where they adopted him and raised him. Arnie attended school in Martin and graduated from high school there in 1955. He then attended and graduated from the Minot Business College. After graduation he worked in the Cargill Elevator in Anamoose for a short time before taking over the Putz family farm. Arnie especially enjoyed raising cattle.
Arnie married Marcella (Sally) Fix on September 4, 1961 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey. Before their marriage, while Sally was attending beauty school in Bismarck, he surprised her by taking instructions in Catholicism before proposing to her. There was a diocese ruling that at that time you were to belong to the church nearest you and so they joined and attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Anamoose.
He loved the outdoors and raised beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. He won first place in a Sheridan County Soil Conservation beautification award in 1978. He also fed birds and located the main feeding station right outside Sally's beauty shop window. Many customers enjoyed watching the wide variety of birds he fed. Arnie usually had a pet dog and he favored black labs.
Arnie enjoyed hunting with his son Gregg and brother-in-law, Jim Fix. He was very proud Gregg's shooting a trophy deer one year and had it mounted for him. He also enjoyed bowling and outdoor activities including fishing, snowmobiling and trapping. His favorite color was blue.
Arnie developed a severe nerve deafness problem and avoided social activities and crowds. Several years later he came down with a very aggressive form of Alzheimers which was prevalent in his family. His adopted mother and several Schliff siblings all succumbed to the disease. Arnie eventually became incapacitated requiring a hoisting device to move him. For the past two years Arnie was a resident of the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. He loved the Dairy Queen lunches Sally brought to him and the many hours of solitaire card games they played at the nursing home.
Arnold is survived by his wife, Sally; son, Gregg (Holly) of Fargo and a precious granddaughter, Shelby; brother-in-law, Jim (Janice) Fix, Marion (Clarence) Bartz; Diane (Larry) Carmichael, Jackie Fix and husband Brad Mincher and Barbara Bjerklie; numerous nieces and nephews.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; adoptive parents; Schliff siblings, Gladys, Elsie, Ralph, Charles, Melvin and Arlene.
