Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Arlo Joel Helm was born in Harvey, January 17, 1948, to Robert and Lillian (Liebelt) Helm.  Raised on the family farm south of Martin, he grew his love for horses and fixing anything broken.  He started school in Martin and moved on to Harvey where he graduated from High School in 1966.  He loved wrestling, football and fighting in his younger years and the family always appreciated a story of the glory days.

Arlo married the love of his life, Kathy (Mehlhouse) Helm, on March 26, 1973 and made their first home in Martin ND. Jason Lee, the first of two children, was born in 1974 and Jennifer (Jenner) Jean in 1976.  Arlo, once a mayor and head of police in Martin ND, worked for his lifelong friend and mentor, Ed Coombs, at BoCats Inc, a manufacturer of tanks and trailers. There, he displayed a true gift for drafting, welding, and fabrication.  A slowing industry, along with a start to what would be a lifelong medical issue, led the family to a new home in Harvey.  Arlo took on a "Jack of all Trades" role with Halvorson Construction, where he ran and maintained a crushing plant, operated heavy equipment, and drove truck as needed by the company. He was always providing for his family as medical issues lingered.  Arlo took a new role as a salesman where he sported a new leather jacket and fresh head of hair, which was envied by all, for two local car dealerships. Those medical issues prevailed once more, and Arlo and Kathy switched provider roles for the home in the middle and early high school years for Jason and Jenny. The lunches were never the same, but the love that went with them were.  Arlo stayed busy and home schooled to gain an even better knowledge for guns and his door became a hot spot during the hunting seasons for anyone with an issue. Arlo's true passion was hunting and guns, and the fondest memories will be of an acrobatic shot attempt made as part of one of his literally hundreds of "hot pursuits!"

Arlo, a proud, yet simple man with the kindest heart, a friend to many and the best husband and father you could imagine, loved his family dearly. To brag of his children and grandchildren, literally filled his heart with everything he needed to live a long and endearing life. His passion for his wife never faded and was present until his last breath. Arlo and Kathy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year with their family. The Lord his only idol, besides Elvis, was worshipped over 70 years at Trinity Bethany church in Harvey.

In his later years and on his best of days, he enjoyed the company of his best of friends, Jimmy and Dave. Throughout all of his medical problems, his smile prevailed, and he persevered.  Remembered always for his infectious smile … contagious laugh … and dedication to help a friend in need. His family is forever grateful for all the friends and family who touched his life, making him the man we will always remember. Forever missed and always loved, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; son, Jason, wife Chloe Helm and daughter, Jenny (Keith Hegney) Johns; two honorary children, Paige Helm and Dalton (Sarah) Helm; seven gorgeous grandchildren, Jackson, Morgan, Stella, Gavyn, Bekum, Brinley, and RJ; two sisters, Janice Kesler and Jeanette Weltz; several nieces and nephews; even more great nieces and nephews; and an insurmountable number of best friends.   Arlo was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lillian Helm, Father-in-law, Ralph Mehlhouse, two brothers, Larry and Robert, sister Kathy Degenstein, brothers in law, Jim Kesler, Marvin Mehlhouse, Jerry Weltz and Leon Degenstein.
