Obituary

Alvin Herr 78 of McClusky died Monday August 8, 2011 at the Baptist Nursing Home of Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at the McClusky Baptist Church of McClusky on Friday August 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at the Hertz Funeral Home in McClusky on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Burial will be held at the McClusky City Cemetery of McClusky.

Alvin was born on August 22, 1932 near McClusky. He was the son of Gotthilf and Caroline (Waltz) Herr. Alvin grew up and attended school near McClusky and graduated from McClusky High School in 1950. As a young man he farmed with his father. Alvin married Lois Kessler on June 27, 1954 in McClusky. They lived and farmed in the McClusky area all their lives. Alvin entered the Army on January 28, 1955. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and Fort Lewis Washington. Alvin was honorably discharged on January 25, 1957. Alvin and Lois returned to McClusky where he lived and farmed until his death. Alvin was a member of the McClusky Baptist Church where he served as a church deacon, treasurer and Sunday school superintendent and teacher. Alvin was also a member of the McClusky Rural Fire Department and Ambulance Service and served on the Co-op Elevator board in McClusky. Alvin served on the McClusky School Board for 16 years and was a school bus driver for many years. Alvin was currently serving on the McLean/Sheridan Rural Water board. As a young man Alvin enjoyed fur trapping.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Lois of McClusky; sons, Timothy (Dorothy) Herr of Winnipeg, Canada, Thomas and (Sandy) Herr of McClusky, Ronald and (Elka) Herr of Bismarck, Paul (Maxine) Herr of Bismarck; grandchildren, James, Luke, Isaiah, Josiah, Elijah, Rachel, Caleb, Noah; sisters, Martha Hirsch of Pleasanton, CA, Pearl Sundet of Williston, Alice Kleingartner of Bismarck, Elaine (Al) Mitzel of Fargo; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Herr of Bismarck. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Reuben Herr and Robert Herr; sisters, Olga Kemmit and Lena Hanson.
