Albert Faul Jr. age 87, Harvey, ND passed away on June 22, 2022 at the St. Aloisius Hospital in Harvey.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 27 at Faith Lutheran Church with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.  Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Junior, as he was affectionately known, was born September 21, 1934 to Albert and Christine (Hirschkorn) Faul on the family farm southwest of Harvey in Sheridan County.  He attended grade school a mile and a half from the farm and Harvey High School for a short time, leaving to operate the family farm with his father until entering the Army.  He was stationed in Germany for two years, and was honorably discharged to continue farming with his father while his younger brother, Jim, completed his Army service.  On March 24 th , 1962, he married Hazel McKinven in Harvey.  They lived on the Faul family farm until Jim returned from the service, and then purchased their own farm, just two miles away.  Junior loved the farm life, and took great pride in his grain and livestock operation, earning the Sheridan County Soil Conservation award in 1972.

In the 1970's the Bureau of Reclamation ramped up efforts to build the Lonetree Reservoir, which threatened to take the land of both farms.  Knowing they might be fighting a battle they couldn't win and their days on the farm may be numbered, they purchased a home in Harvey in 1975.  During this time, Junior also started Faul Manufacturing, where he became a proficient welder, inventing and customizing equipment he recognized the need for in his own farming operation.  He was a talented inventor, and many wondered what he would have been able to accomplish with a little more education and some computer skills.  As it was, he invented numerous agriculture-related items over the years, including the Faul 3-Point Hitch, which he marketed and sold across the US and Canada.

After battling the Bureau of Reclamation for many years, he and Hazel ended up selling their land to them in 1983.  They relocated their farmstead a couple miles south of Harvey, and acquired farm land north of Harvey.

Junior was a man who loved the farm life and was content to spend time driving the section lines looking at crops.  He also enjoyed a number of outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing.  He wasn't much of a traveler, relenting to travel with Hazel on occasion and enjoying trips to Minnesota to visit his daughter and son in law, but fishing and hunting trips with his brothers in law were treasured, and made for some good stories at family gatherings.

Junior was happiest when he was busy, and in later years after closing the manufacturing business, he stayed busy restoring old tractors and went back to creating with wood, something he had done as a child.  Junior was rare in that he never used a plan or a blueprint, yet he created detailed tractors, barns, windmills, and other farm related items from wood.

He was an active member of the community, serving with the Lions Club and Rural Fireman's Board. He was also the Sheridan County Fairview Township board Secretary and a director on the Central Plains Water District board.  He served as a council member for First Lutheran Church in Harvey and was a charter member at Faith Lutheran in Harvey, where he also shared his gift of metalwork, making the railings, ramp, and other items.

In March of this year, he and Hazel celebrated their 60 th Wedding Anniversary.  Junior will be greatly missed, but has left a legacy with his family that will live on.  He is survived by his wife, Hazel, daughter Debra (Mark) Mitzel of Baxter, Minnesota, sister Rose (Jerry) High of Harvey, and nephew Scott McKinven of Harvey, who was like the bonus son he never had, as well as several sisters and brothers in law, nieces, nephews, and special friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Sr and Christine Faul, stepmother Christine, brothers Wesley, James and Leo, and sister Edna Thon.
